Balancing New Skills With New Campaigns

August 6th, 2008  |  Published in Uncategorized

I want to spend some time building out my skills — a little CSS, graphic design, HTML, and maybe some PHP.  But, I spent a lot of time just building campaigns.

Assigning my time:

  1. Setting up new campaigns.
  2. Researching new campaigns
  3. High level thinking (on the deck with a notebook and pen)
  4. Learning new skills

High Level Thinking

August 6th, 2008  |  Published in Uncategorized

With a lot of monotonous tasks in affiliate marketing, it’s easy to forget strategic thinking.

I spent some time on the deck tonight, with a pen and notebook (no computer) to explore some PPC ideas that have been on my mind.  Nothing like crickets to get your mind thinking. Wish I had more of that in the city.

Alright, the offer I need for Facebook is…:

The offers that convert well, so everyone is doing:

  1. Dating
  2. Diet
  3. Games

Clicks are expensive, until you find an ad that converts well — and then Facebook lowers you cost per click.

I’ll keep testing these offers, however…

What offers can I run that convert with little competition….??  I need to think about this.

FOREIGN BEACH-HEAD

I keep hearing about the big marketers making a lot abroad.  I should consider running ads in France.  Few affiliates speak French — and I do.  I could run offers in Italy as well.

To do:

  1. Set up Facebook test accounts for France.
  2. Find French offers.

A New Faebook Strategy?

August 6th, 2008  |  Published in Uncategorized

I’ve been making a lot of ads and throwing them at the Facebook wall, hoping for approval.  I got 78 ads approved today and yesterday, which is a good sign.  But, I’m competing in a competitive niche and the clicks are extremely low.  That means that when I do get clicks, it’s costing me a lot.

I did some research and read that unique state ads tend to do better.  So, instead of just "New Diet," you would say "New Californian Diet".

So maybe this is what I should do:

  1. Pick a state
  2. Write X ads for that state
  3. Pick the ones that work
  4. Replicate those winners for all the remaining states.

Yahoo Paused for Now

August 5th, 2008  |  Published in Uncategorized

I’m getting obsessed with Facebook.  I’m determined to make it work — so much so that I’ve paused other campaigns so I can hone in.  I’m confident it will produce results.

Facebook Ad Service is a beast.  As I continue to bang on it, I think I’m getting closer to figuring it out.

I spent the night setting up a new campaign.  I’ve tested 4 so far.  The first Facebook banned. The second didn’t convert, ever. The third converted at a 60 percent loss.  The forth I set up tonight.  I’m optimistic this one will work out well.

Facebook’s Ad Service Is Terrible — and I Love It!

August 3rd, 2008  |  Published in Uncategorized

Facebook loves to reject my ads — and everyone else’s ads for that matter.  Some people get pissed.  I couldn’t be happier.

Facebook’s kneejerk, teenage, PMS reactions tell me that there is a huge barrier to entry for your average advertiser.  Unless you are determined to make mad money on facebook, Facebook will break you.  Thank you Facebook for thinning the ranks!

En Route to Boston!

Getting ready for the Affiliate Summit in Boston!

Leaving for Connecticut tomorrow.  I’ll see my grandparents en route — and get fed Lasagna while setting up affiliate campaigns.  Oh, the good life!

Do PPC With a Mac

July 27th, 2008  |  Published in Uncategorized

I’m running into online products that are incompatible with macs.  I wouldn’t know that unless I used a mac.  Essentially, affiliates who are unaware of incampability issues are sending traffic that cannot convert — ie, wasting money.  Solution?  Run PPC campaigns with a mac.

Yahoo Quality Score

July 27th, 2008  |  Published in Uncategorized

Quality score is significant — it determines the frequency and the cost of the clicks that Yahoo permits its users.

I need to develop a procedure/system for when the quality score drops.  Here is some personal speculation:

  1. Create new ads
  2. Delete bad ads
  3. Increase initial bid, to get higher placement and consequently, more clicks — which will in turn increase my quality score.
  4. Unique Landing Page?
  5. Even with direct links, have a unique display URL.

Figuring out a system is important.  I’m making it a high priority.
